In Parchman there was this constant kind of needling from a group of two or three women. They were trustees. They would saunter though and watch us while we were showering. We weren't allowed to smoke, and they'd have cigarettes and they'd flick the ashes at us. That kind of stuff. They were Euro-American not African American.

Claire O'Connor grew up in Boston, MA (where she was born) and St. Paul, MN.
